Supermarkets are selling beer at a cheaper price than water, fuelling concern over their role in Britain's binge-drinking crisis.

Despite repeated public health warnings, Tesco, Sainsbury's and Asda now offer lager at just 22p a can - less per litre than their ownbrand-mineral water and cola, and cheap enough to allow someone to get drunk for just £1.

An investigation has uncovered a fierce alcohol price war between the major supermarkets.

Lager is now so cheap that the stores pay more in excise duties than they charge at the till.

When production costs and overheads are taken into account, experts estimate shops are losing up to 8p a can.

Public-health bodies, doctors and MPs were furious when confronted with the findings.

Don Shenker, director of policy for Alcohol Concern, said: "There is no justification for the sale of lager at such a ridiculously low price. The fact that it is cheaper than their own brand of cola per litre is appalling".

No pienso pontificar al respecto pero hay algo que si me enfurece:

"This sends entirely the wrong message to the young drinkers we are trying to steer away from alcohol abuse. They will think that if it's so cheap, it must be OK. We would urge the supermarkets to seriously review their pricing policy."

He visto chicos y chicas (y cuando digo chicos y chicas me refiero a preadolescentes en adelante) con las neuronas limadas por el alcohol (y aderezado con alguna droga ilegal, también). Poner trabas al consumo (precios, no poder comprar hasta cierta edad, horarios, consumo en la vía pública, etc.) no es la solución... no nos engañemos, el alcohol se consigue igual, pero las trabas sin duda ayudan. El comienzo del fin de este problema pasa por la educación. Que, como y cuando se bebe.

En España los datos son estremecedores y como mencionaron anoche en un reportaje en TVE los índices de consumo en los jóvenes se han disparado. Y lo dicho, pasa por la educación, como todo (si, todo) en la vida. Pero como decía un responsable del Programa Nacional de Drogas y Adicciones, "cuando los niños son pequeños los padres no hablan con ellos del tema porque no hace falta... y cuando son adolescentes ya no se puede hablar".

El alcoholismo es una enfermedad pero no se puede ayudar, colaborar a que se declare. Es como la diabetes: el tipo de diabetes más común se dispara por los malos hábitos de alimentación y el sedentarismo, o sea, en muchos casos se podría evitar. Y muchos casos de alcoholismo también, simplemente con no poner en manos de niños y niñas cervezas casi regaladas.
